Maintaining a clean air filter in your air conditioner is vital to ensure your unit continues operating effectively. The build-up of dirt, dust and debris in your filter will cause your unit to use more energy, increase your electricity bills, and potentially impact the air quality of your home. Here's a handy guide to help you clean your filters at home.
Before you begin, it's vital you ensure your air conditioner is switched off. Leaving your air conditioner on with the filter removed will result in unfiltered air circulating throughout your space.
Use a screwdriver to open your unit and remove the filter. It's important you look carefully inside your unit to ensure all filters are removed, as some units carry multiple vents. If you have trouble locating the filter in your unit, consult the owner's manual for help. The manual will also advise you if you can clean your filter, or if it will need to be replaced.
Any collection of dust or debris on your filter needs to be removed. If there's no grime on your filter, you can easily use your vacuum hose attachment, or a handheld vacuum, to return your filter to mint condition. Any build-up or dirt that isn't removed with a vacuum needs to be washed off.
You can give your filter a deep clean by soaking it for an hour in a solution of one part water and one part white vinegar. Afterwards, ensure you rinse the filter and allow it to dry completely before placing it back in your unit. Large filters might need to be washed with a garden hose, but we recommend not using a pressurised setting as this can lead to damage.
When you're cleaning your filter, it helps to keep the following in mind:
